Getting Started with a Passion

Why do I have a “passion for golf”? There isn’t just one reason and I certainly won’t be able to mention them all in this opening article, but let me start with a few.

Golf has become a great activity for me to share with the men in my life. I didn’t begin to play until my early 20’s with my first husband, Steve, who was a very good golfer having been on a golf team in high school and college. We didn’t or couldn’t play much with our priorities for careers and starting a family. As a beginner, I certainly wasn’t very good in those early days, but I would occasionally hit a really awesome shot that gave me the hope one day I might be very good. When our two sons started showing an interest in golf, we had some fun family times playing together. As the boys entered their teenage years, both their skills and interest in golf grew greater. About that time I became a single parent and realized that golf would be a wonderful activity that I could enjoy with my sons. If you think about it, there aren’t always a lot of things that moms and teenage sons can do together. I must say, though, at that time both my sons were both playing quite well with single digit handicaps, while I was often shooting scores greater than 135.

Let’s fast forward to today… I now have a single digit handicap myself, although it doesn’t always stay there. My sons still have a good game, but they don’t play as frequently because they now have other priorities in their life. My regular playing partner is my husband, Stuart, who also has a great passion for golf. We usually play 3 or 4 rounds a week and a great vacation frequently involves multiple rounds of golf.

After playing regularly and seeing my game improve dramatically over the past 12 years, my passion for the game has grown. I’ve met lots of wonderful fellow golfers, enjoyed magnificent scenery, and experienced many magical moments of golf that have enriched my life tremendously all because of golf. My hope in writing about some of my special golfing moments and thoughts about the game is to give a voice to the passion that keeps us coming back to play another round.
